Surf Team Wins Meet

Earth Day Poster Contest Results

Congratulations to all intermediate students who participated in this year's poster contest! Thank you teachers who submitted student work!!! What a great turn out of participants! The high school students were very impressed with your participation and effort! The Environmental Club members had a difficult time selecting winners due to such great talent!Posters will be displayed on campus for public viewing. Mahalo and continue to "Go Green!" Prizes and award certificates will be sent to Mr. Kalama for distribution.

Kahuku debate team in final 4

The Kahuku High & Intermediate School debate team is one of four teams from across the nation competing in the New York University National Public Policy Forum National debate finals.

By advancing to the finals, the Kahuku debaters are eligible for a $10,000 grand prize. The competition takes place April 26 on the New York University campus.

Tiffany Polk new champ in recitation of poetry

Kahuku High & Intermediate School student Tiffany Polk is the state winner in the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.

Polk, a senior, recited "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou and "Unknown Girl in a Maternity Ward" by Anne Sexton. She won an all-expenses-paid trip to the national finals in Washington, D.C., and a chance to win a $20,000 college scholarship. She also won $500 to purchase poetry books for her high school and $200 in cash.

Kahuku High School girls track and field team wins title

For a team filled with seniors, finishing first only seemed right for the Kahuku High School girls track and field team.

"After all these years, things shouldn't always be the same," Kahuku coach Garth Spurrier said. "You should be getting better."

The Red Raiders, with experience and depth, won last night's O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division Championships at Kaiser Stadium, finishing with 145 points. Kaiser was second with 100.

Kahuku library sets free April programs

Kahuku Public & School Library will host a series of free Tuesday night programs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the conference room during April.

Patrick Ball, known for his Celtic harp performances, will host "Celtic Tales" on Tuesday for ages 5 to adult.

Hawaiian Herbs, back by popular demand, features Kapua Fonoimoana and Carol Anamizu on April 22, sharing their knowledge to people of all ages.

Jimmy Leonardi will present Hawaiian Bottles of Long Ago on April 29. Leonardi, a historian and high school teacher, has been collecting bottles and pottery found on O'ahu since 1970. This lecture is suitable for ages 12 and up.

If a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation are needed, call the library at 293-8935.

Pacific American Foundation "Hanai i ka Ipu"

Hanai I Ka Ipu is a Federally Funded (Free) program for students grades 7-12 and they are accepting applications now! They meet two Saturday's a month and do fun learning activities about Hawaiian Culture and go on exciting excursions to various areas, even to the outer islands. The focus of the program is on COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP. This program is for all Pacific Island Youth. They also offer career placement activities as well. Kahuku girls' water polo still undefeated

Just two days after its bus turned over into a ditch while swerving to avoid hitting another vehicle, the Kahuku High School girls’ water polo team was back in the pool at Brigham Young-Hawai‘i in Lä‘ie. In its final home game yesterday, the Red Raiders routed Mililani, 15-1, to remain undefeated.

Vocal Motion Auditions

Vocal Motion is looking for good singers to be members of the group next year. The auditions will be held next week, April 14 - 18. Feel free to try out for more than one voice part. Come to the choir room right after school on the day of your choice. Good luck!

Foodland Shop for Higher Education

Kahuku finished first in the Foodland scholarship competition. That means we have the opportunity to pick five seniors to win $2,000 scholarships (each) to help pay for college. Seniors must plan to enroll in a four-year college during the next academic year. Come to Q-2 to pick up the one page application.

JROTC Cadets step up to challenge

26 Kahuku Cadets spent spring break at Schofield Barracks with 500 other cadets from all over the state. Each JROTC battalion sent 4 cadets to a 4 day advanced camp where they went through leadership training in preparation to assume leadership positions for the main camp which began on March 24th. Cadets negotiated obstacle courses, learned drown proofing techniques, rappelled and many other activities. Every cadet said they were glad they went and really enjoyed meeting new people and gained enormous self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Job well done! You can also enjoy these activities, make sure you enroll in JROTC!

Environmental Poster Contest

Enter and win! Draw or paint a creative poster. Poster must be no larger than 18x20 and no smaller than 11x14. Your poster must have the theme written: Go Green! Keep the World Clean! You must put your name, teacher, grade on the back of your poster. Turn in your completed poster to room Y-202 on or before April 14th by 2:30 PM. Winning posters will be displayed on Earth Day, April 21st. This contest is sponsored by the Environmental Club and open to 7th and 8th graders only.

Sophmore Banquet

Calling all sophomores!!! Pay your dues before you lose out on our banquet. The permission forms will be going out on Thursday in your English classes. Dues are $7.00. You know you want to go!!

Fealofani Day 2008

On Saturday, April 15, 2008 the bus leaves KHIS in front of the gym at 7:00 AM and will depart Leilehua at 3:30 PM. Be sure to attend Tuesday's practice, April 1st to pick up your permission slips. Practice starts at 4:00 PM at BYU front left field. Fa'afetai tele lava.

Canned food drive

Hawaii Food Bank needs you!
Will your classroom be the one to win for the most cans donated to the Food Bank of Hawaii? Demonstrate your civic duty by helping others in need. What to do? Donate canned food. After collecting cans from your classroom, write out the total weight of the cans on a paper with your teacher's name, room number, and attach it to the box(es).
Where and when to drop them off? On April 17th, bring your can-filled boxes to room Y-202, the last day of the competition. May the best classroom win! Kahuku student wins D.C. trip in poetry recitation contest

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Honolulu Theater for Youth have announced the winners of the state finals for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. Tiffany Polk, a student at Kahuku High School, will receive an all-expenses-paid trip (with chaperone) to compete in the National Finals in Washington, DC, on April 28-29, with a chance to win a $20,000 college scholarship. She also won $500 for Kahuku High School to use to purchase poetry books, and a $200 cash prize.

May Day Section sign ups

The entire month of April is May Night rehearsal month. Check the schedules for rehearsals in the cafe or at P8. All sign ups will be done as students actually show up to rehearsals. Students will have the first two rehearsals to sign up (and show up for rehearsals). Instructors will list your names and grade and submit lists to SBG for follow up on class attendance or Teacher disapproval. All instructors are in agreement that students cannot just jump in on a section at the last minute. The entertainment sections this year are (in order of the program): Maori - Instructor: Margie Mataira / Fiji - Bale Tuisavura / Tahiti - Jon and Tiani Mariteragi/ Tonga - Fasi and Mele Tovo / Samoa - Barbi Ili. Participation is open to students grades 7-12. Students need to realize, however, that doing poorly in any class or poor attendance in any class may jeopardize your participation.

Cheerleading Tryouts

Those of you who are trying out, PLEASE make sure you've turned in all the paperwork (Physical, Assumption of Risk "Parent Consent") to Mrs. Tugman before trying out on Wed., 4/2/08. If you do not have it, you will be asked to leave the try-outs clinics.

Friendly Reminder...you MUST have everything turned in before clinics start on Wednesday, April 2nd.
(1) Physical must be current. Check with Mrs. Tugman or Mrs. Mesarch to make sure you're up-to-date.
(2) Risk form turned into Mrs. Tugman.
(3) Application (salmon colored) turned into Mrs. Mesarch.
(4) All obligations must be cleared.
(5) Two teacher evaluations turned into Mrs. Mesarch by Friday,April 4th. Come see Mrs. Mesarch in Y-103 if you need forms or have any questions.
