Hi'ilei Cummings scored 18 points and Rachel Tailele 16 as host Kahuku remained unbeaten with a 67-35 rout of Leilehua last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference girls basketball game.

Kahuku (4-0) handed Leilehua (3-1) its first loss of the season.

Kahuku girls edge Kalāheo in two overtimes, 59-52

Hi'ilei Cummings scored 17 points, Joshlyn Noga added 13 and visiting Kahuku beat host Kalaheo, 59-52, in double overtime last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association White girls basketball game.

The Red Raiders outscored the Mustangs 11-4 in the second overtime. Both teams scored six points in the first overtime.

Farrington, Kahuku seek repeats

WHITE CONFERENCE

The favorite: Kahuku. Despite struggles early on — losses to Clovis West (Calif.) 78-36, 'Iolani 51-40 and Mid-Pacific 70-46 — the Lady Raiders have plenty of size and skill.

Last year's team (21-3, 14-1 OIA White) dominated the conference before losing a 60-56 stunner to Kapaa in the state quarterfinals. Coach Junior Avei is trying to transform his team into a consistent, aggressive, high-octane performer.

With such an early start, however, Kahuku won't be any different from other OIA teams still trying to establish a foundation with just a few weeks of practices. In time, Kahuku could emerge as one of the best teams in the state regardless of classification.

Kahuku's Galea'i flashed many skills

Helping bring basketball fever back to the island's most feverish football community, Kahuku senior Jray Galea'i led the Red Raiders to a perfect and thrilling O'ahu Interscholastic Association regular season.

For his efforts, he was named OIA Red Conference Eastern Division Player of the Year after a recent vote of league coaches.

Galea'i, a 6-foot guard, was an explosive force in the open court who also could pull up and drain the 3-pointer or penetrate and dish to teammates.

In typical thrilling fashion capped by another frantic finish, Kahuku held off 'Iolani, 56-53, last night to advance to today's Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Championship game.

In a boys basketball state quarterfinal game that lived up to its championship hype, Kahuku held off Punahou, 40-39, last night before a raucous near-capacity crowd of about 1,600 at Radford's James Alegre Gym.

Kahuku rallies past Kaimuki to capture OIA Red crown

Kahuku held off Kaimuki, 39-36, last night for its second O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball championship in five years before a raucous near-capacity crowd of about 1,500 at Radford's James Alegre Gym.

The Red Raiders improved to 17-1 in the regular and postseason and will receive the OIA's top seed and first-round bye in this week's state tournament. Kaimuki fell to 12-5 and will begin state tournament play in Wednesday's first round.

Kahuku beats Kaimuki; teams play again for title

Four times was not enough.

Third-ranked Kaimuki and fourth-ranked Kahuku will meet for the fifth time this season tomorrow — this time for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division championship.

The Red Raiders forced the winner-take-all game after handing the Bulldogs their first loss in the OIA's modified double-elimination postseason tournament, 45-41, last night at McKinley.

Kapa'a tops No. 1 Kahuku, 60-56, in win to 'dye' for

As if facing the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals wasn't motivation enough, the Kapa'a players were playing with an extra incentive last night.

Kapa'a coach Terry Maguire told her players that if they knocked off Kahuku, they would be allowed to dye their hair green.

The Warriors can break out the coloring after topping Kahuku, 60-56, in the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines Girls DIvision II State Basketball Championship quarterfinals last night at Kalani High School.

Punahou, Kahuku earn top seeds for state girls basketball championships

Punahou and Kahuku earned the No. 1 seeds for this week's Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Championships.

...Kahuku, the OIA White champion, is the No. 1 seed in Division II. The Red Raiders receive a first-round bye and face the winner of Tuesday's Kapa'a-St. Andrew's game in Wednesday's quarterfinals at Kalani.

Kahuku captures OIA White title

Much like how they traveled, the Kahuku Red Raiders went from one end to the other to win the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White girls basketball championship.

Vaimalama Tito and reserves Jessica Falemalu and Jovan Falemalu scored 10 points each, and Kahuku's defense pressed the entire length of the floor to beat Kaimuki, 61-48, last night.

Kahuku (14-1), ranked No. 10 in The Advertiser's statewide poll of coaches and media, traveled from the North Shore to McKinley's Student Council Gym and likely secured a seed for next week's Division II state tournament.

Kahuku boys now 13-0 after edging Moanalua

Jray Galeai scored 14 points and hit the go-ahead basket in the final minute as the host Kahuku Red Raiders rallied past Moanalua Na Menehune, 46-44, last night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament.

Simply Amazing!

What a busy weekend for our students and teachers! Congratulations to our We The People team! They did an excellent job at KCC and will be heading to Washington D.C. in April! When do these students have time to learn about the Constitution? I was so impressed and got chicken skin when one of the judges went on and on (and on) about how our Kahuku students always have an edge because they are truly enthusiastic and passionate about the information and knowledge that they are able to share. Wow!

Next stop was the Scholastic Art Awards....a number of our students getting silver and gold key awards. Vocal Motion performed at the Scholastic Art Awards and Mrs. Hamamoto told me that she had heard Vocal Motion twice in one day and the second time was as entertaining as the first time.

Paddlers went to Maui to participate in their first state tournament. They came in 6th place in the quarterfinals. Awesome!

No. 2 Kahuku boys top No. 5 Kaimuki in OT

Kahuku overcame a six-point deficit with under two minutes remaining in regulation and then outscored Kaimuki 13-6 in overtime last night for a pulsating 68-61 O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball victory.

A vocal home crowd of about 450 watched the Red Raiders — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 9-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. Kaimuki, ranked No. 5, fell to 5-3 as its five-game win streak ended.

Jray Galeai and Nehoa Akina scored 11 points each, helping the No. 3 Kahuku Red Raiders turn back the No. 6 Kalaheo Mustangs, 56-52, last night to remain unbeaten in boys O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East basketball play.

KAHUKU — Even without its marquee player, Kahuku had too much for Kalaheo last night and pulled away for a 52-36 victory in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.
